The Legal Side of Getting Married in Iceland
The easiest way to get married in Iceland is to get legally married in the US and then have your symbolic/spiritual ceremony in Iceland. If not, you will need to each submit a certificate of marital status issued by your local county. A few requirements:
+ Birth certificates of both parties.
+ 18+ years old and not already married.
+ If you have been divorced, you’ll need to bring proof of divorce - a divorce decree
+ If you are a widower, a document detailing that the deceased’s estate has been divided and finalized.
+ submit all original documents at least 3 weeks before wedding, or hire a local wedding planner to do this for you.
+ After you are married, you will need to obtain a wedding certificate in English from the National Registry.
So as you can see, it is much easier to get legally married in the states and then travel to Iceland for your vows and ceremony.
